Welcome to your free lesson on Yiddish greetings, the very first lesson of the course.

These Yiddish Greetings are obviously important if you want to be a mensch (lit. human, a civilized person.) 

Instructions:

Go through the list of Yiddish Greetings, and pronounce them for yourself. Get a feel for them. Repeat as necessary. "Repetition is the mother of skill," as my zeyde used to say.

Common greeting of Hebrew derivation. Literally: Peace be upon you! Hello!

Aleykhm Shalom!

The response to the above. Literally: Upon you peace! Right back at you!

Hello. Literally: A good,as in “Have a good one!”

Good day

A gut morgen

Good morning


אַ גוטן אָוונט

A gutn ovent

Good evening

A gute nakht!

Good night

(Have a) good year. A response to, or an addition to any of the greetings here. It is customary to respond to a blessing with a greater blessing.

(If you can read the Yiddish alphabet you'll notice this greeting has been trancribed and pronounced different than its spelling. We've given the colloquial pronounciation, but it can also be pronouced just as its spelled.)

How are you? Literally: What are you doing?
