Lesson 1b – Common Yiddish Words

The first words we will learn in your second Yiddish lesson are very common Yiddish words. In fact, if you saw Fiddler on the Roof, you probably know some of the already! Just add a few more basic words and  you can pretend you speak Yiddish, even if you don't.

That isn't our goal here, of course. We want to learn Yiddish, not just to pretend we know it... but obviously you want to know these common Yiddish words well. They are a great basis to a working vocabulary.

As in the first lesson, listen to the audio by clicking the play button on the player under the word.

Go through the list of words, and pronounce them for yourself. Get a feel for them. Repeat as necessary. "Repetition is the mother of skill," as my zeyde used to say.
